Darrell Swigert was born in Rifle, Colorado, near his grandparents' cattle ranches. He went to school in Preston, Idaho and ISU. At that time there was not a semi-professional hockey team in Idaho, much less a high school hockey team in Preston. From a young age, Darrell devoured books on the game and started teaching his friends all about hockey. They played “Pond Hockey” all winter long, learning the rules and maneuvers through books. He just loved the speed of the game and couldn’t get enough of it!
He didn’t play “officially” until he moved to Boise from Colorado in 1998 and got involved in recreational hockey at Qwest Arena and Idaho Ice World. Today, he is considered the “old man” on the team playing goalie at the young age of 64.
He started the Foundation wanting to give youth the chance he never had….To play with good equipment, smooth ice and great coaches! And maybe for a few really talented young skaters, go on to play in college.
In addition to hockey, Darrell has always had an intense love of adrenaline sports. He competed in bull, bareback & saddle bronc riding competitions until he was about 40. He was an avid mountain climber, kayaker, skier and still sails. He played tennis, baseball and softball. His 25 year career as a professional driver allowed him the varied schedule he required to enjoy his sports.
